Beyond the Front Gate
Life at the residence.
The residence sits in the heart of the Coachella Valley, in Rancho Mirage, California, a place known for its luxurious lifestyle and its stunning desert landscapes. That matters more than it sounds like it should. A person who moves here is not moving away from a life. The valley is still out there, and most of it is a few minutes from the door.
Minutes, not miles
What sits just outside the gate.
Chosen for how they actually work on the day: level walking, places to sit, and more of them free than not.
In Rancho Mirage
-
Sunnylands Center & Gardens
Free · Wednesday to Sunday
Nine acres of desert gardens with a mile of level walking paths, plus exhibitions, films and talks. Admission to the Center and Gardens costs nothing. Open mid-September through early June, which is exactly the season anyone wants to be outside here.
-
Rancho Mirage Library & Observatory
Free · No ticket, no library card
Lectures, live music, films, author talks and book discussions, all of it free and none of it ticketed. The observatory houses a research-grade telescope and runs guided stargazing evenings. In January it hosts the Rancho Mirage Writers Festival.
-
The River
Rancho Mirage
Open-air shopping and dining on Highway 111, with a cinema whose seats recline. Somewhere to spend an afternoon that involves sitting down as often as walking.
-
Cotino
2,500 feet from the gate
Shops, restaurants, the twenty-six acre lagoon and beach access, close enough to reach and return from inside an afternoon.
A short drive
-
El Paseo
5 minutes
The valley's main street for shopping, galleries and a long lunch.
-
Faye Sarkowsky Sculpture Garden
Free · At the edge of El Paseo
Four acres, fourteen sculptures, sixty desert plant species and free parking. Open every day from sunrise to sunset, so it works as a half hour or a whole morning.
-
McCallum Theatre
Palm Desert
The valley's main stage. Wheelchair seating on every level, a hearing loop, assistive listening devices, large-print programs on request and a drop-off area at the entrance. Worth calling the box office ahead so they can seat you properly.
-
The Living Desert
Palm Desert
Gardens and a zoo, paved throughout. The reliable answer when the great-grandchildren visit.
-
Eisenhower Medical Center
10 minutes
Full hospital and specialist care, close enough that an appointment is an errand rather than an expedition.
Out and about
There is a calendar worth keeping.
Theater, movies, and concerts run through most of the year. The waterparks are a short drive for the great-grandchildren. Closer to home, we plan recreational activities together with families, physicians, and the residents themselves: worship, community events, senior center events, and organized group activities.
None of it is compulsory. A resident who would rather read on the patio reads on the patio.
On the property
Reasons to stay a while.
There is a tennis and pickleball court on the grounds, and the pool, and the covered patios. Nobody expects an eighty-five year old to play singles. The grandchildren do, and family visits run longer when there is something to do besides sit.
Getting there
Medical and dental appointments are scheduled on request. We remind residents when one is coming and make sure transportation is arranged if it is wanted or needed.
Residents who are able to travel independently in the community still do. We simply keep track of where everyone is, which is a different thing from keeping everyone in.
